A professor of political economy, Pat Utomi, has questioned the continued attacks against the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, despite his third-place finish in the 2023 presidential election.

Utomi raised the concern in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday, wondering why the former Anambra State governor continued to face hostility from different quarters.

He said the level of criticism directed at Obi was difficult to explain, adding that Nigerians deserved answers about the reasons behind the attacks.

“There is no convincing explanation for why a candidate who finished third in the 2023 presidential election attracts this level of hostility from all directions.

“The intensity of the attacks raises questions that Nigerians deserve answers to. Perhaps one day, we will finally understand what really happened in 2023,” Utomi wrote.

Although Utomi did not mention any individual or political party responsible for the attacks, his comments come amid renewed criticism of Obi by some prominent members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has repeatedly criticised Obi during the APC’s presidential campaign rallies in Ekiti and Akwa Ibom states.

Similarly, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, while speaking in Akwa Ibom State on Friday, accused Obi of undermining his presidential ambition with what he described as lies.

President Bola Tinubu also took a swipe at the former Anambra governor, accusing him of abandoning erosion challenges in his state while comparing the situation with his own efforts to confront coastal erosion in Lagos.
