FIDELITY BANK ASKS CUSTOMERS TO DEPOSIT OLD NAIRA NOTES DESPITE SUPREME COURT INJUNCTION
Fidelity Bank Plc on Thursday evening asked it’s customers to deposit their old naira notes latest tomorrow, Friday, February 10, 2023; as the notes will cease to be legal tender from Saturday, February 11, 2023.
In a bulk mail on Thursday night, the Bank directed it’s customers to deposit the old notes.
The position by Fidelity Bank is contrary to the injunction of the Supreme Court, which on Wednesday barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Government of Nigeria, from enforcing the February 10 deadline for the use of old Naira notes.
A seven-man panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice John Okoro, in a unanimous ruling, granted an interim injunction restraining the FG, CBN, commercial banks etc from implementing the February 10, deadline for the old 200, 500 and 1000 Naira notes to stop being a legal tender.
The court further held that the FG, CBN, commercial banks must not continue with the deadline pending the determination of a notice on notice on in respect of the issue on February 15.
