TROPHY FROM FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP ARRIVES IN NIGERIA
By Adeniyi Onaara
On Saturday afternoon, the original FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy, which will be competed for by 32 teams from around the world from July 20 to August 20, arrived in Abuja.
The trophy landed in Nigeria after visiting the other three African countries that will compete in the finals: Morocco, South Africa, and Zambia.
Nigeria is the fourth leg in the trophy’s 32-leg journey before it heads to Australia and New Zealand.
According to sources, Australia and New Zealand will co-host the largest FIFA Women’s World Cup in history.
From 12 noon on Sunday, the trophy will be on display at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, with a photo session planned for a number of invited guests.
The trophy has only ever been won by four countries: the United States, Germany, Norway, and Japan.
It has been won four times by the United States, twice by Germany, and once by Japan and Norway.
The finals will be held at ten different venues across the two host countries, under two distinct confederations – Asian Football Confederation and Oceania Football Federation.
It will be the first time that a FIFA World Cup championship will be held in two confederations.
There are six venues in five different cities around Australia and four venues in New Zealand, with Sydney having two venues.
These are the Sydney Football Stadium and the Stadium Australia, which will host the Final.
