UPDATE: A’ COURT SACKS ABBA YUSUF, AFFIRMS GAWUNA AS WINNER OF KANO ELECTION
The appeal court sitting in Abuja, has read the judgement of the Kano State Governorship election tribunal on Friday.
The election petition tribunal had sacked the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples party (NNPP), Abba yusuf, while affirming the victory of the All Progressives Congress Candidate, Gawuna as the duly elected governor of the state.
The Appeal Court affirmed the tribunal’s decision in its conclusion on Friday, finding that Abba Yusuf’s fielding violated the electoral law because he was ineligible to run in that particular election.
The decision was rendered almost two months after Yusuf was dismissed by the Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on September 20 and Nasiru Gawuna, the candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), was proclaimed the winner of the March 18 election.
Following the March poll, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proclaimed Yusuf, who ran on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the election’s victor.
Because the impacted ballot papers were not signed or stamped, the tribunal ruled that they were illegitimate, deducting 165,663 votes from Yusuf’s total.
The decision was made around six months after INEC gave the NNPP candidate the certificate of return, forcing the APC candidate to admit defeat to Yusuf.
Gawuna claimed in a two-minute audio statement on March 29 that, “as a good Muslim,” he had to accept the election’s result, whether it favoured him or not.
He continued by saying that even though his campaign team had asked INEC to examine the election results, the commission had determined that Yusuf had won.
