The Osun State Government has officially removed Oba Gbenga Joseph Oloyede as the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu with immediate effect.

The decision was announced on Tuesday in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, on behalf of the state government.

Alimi said the action followed consultations, legal review, and approval by the State Executive Council.

He explained that the move was taken in line with the Osun State Chiefs Law (as amended) and other relevant laws governing traditional institutions.

According to the government, Oba Oloyede was convicted in the United States for offences linked to COVID-19 fraud and is currently serving a prison sentence.

“The decision was reached after due consultation, legal consideration and approval by the State Executive Council,” the statement added.

The government also confirmed the withdrawal of all instruments of office previously issued to the monarch, including the staff of office. It further declared the Apetumodu stool vacant pending further procedures.

It added that the process for succession would be announced in due course, in accordance with established customary and legal guidelines.

Security agencies have been directed to maintain peace and order in Ipetumodu, while residents, kingmakers, and stakeholders were urged to remain calm and law-abiding.

Ipetumodu is the headquarters of Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, and the deposed monarch was sentenced by a US court in 2025 over COVID-19-related fraud.
