UPDATE: SENATE QUASHES BILL SEEKING TO ALLOW PARTIES REPLACE NASS MEMBERS
A bill to amend the Electoral Act 2022 that would have allowed political parties to nominate and replace duly elected candidates in the event of a resignation, death, or vacancy (of seats) in the National Assembly (NASS) and State Assemblies, as well as for related matters, was quashed by the Senate.
The bill’s sponsor, Senator Karimi Sunday of the Kogi West Senatorial District, clarified that its goal is to amend the Electoral Act of 2022 so that the winning political party may designate and replace candidates for the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly in the event that a vacancy arises as a result of a candidate’s resignation or death while they are still in office.
Nevertheless, the legislator’s attempt to persuade a considerable portion of his peers of the soundness of this action was unsuccessful.
He was then given the chance to withdraw the bill or make changes by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, but he turned it down.
In a subsequent voice vote, the bill was rejected.
