LASG SERVES IKOYI BUILDING OWNERS CONTRAVENTION NOTICE

Property owners who hold properties within channel setbacks along the Shoreline Estate, Onikoyi Estate, Park View, and Banana Island corridors have received notices of violation from the Lagos State Government.

House owners along the state’s corridor were given a seven-day ultimatum by the government to take down any fences that were intruding on drainage systems.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, made this statement to reporters over the weekend during an examination of many Ikoyi locations, including the State House and Dodan Barracks.

He said most structures in the areas did not observe the standard three metres required by law for the setback of secondary collector drains.

“On investigation, we found out that the first property situated along Onikoyi/ Banana island collector situated inside Onikoyi Estate left 2.5metre for the drainage setback and for us to have a balanced situation we will magnanimously adopt 2.5metre which is smaller than the 3metre required by law,” he said, according to a statement by a spokesperson for the ministry, Kunle Adeshina.

The commissioner also stated that the residents and property owners along the previously mentioned collector drain would have seven days to relocate their fences on both sides of the channel while adhering to the 2.5-metre drainage setback. Enforcement would start as soon as the required notice expired.

Before the start of enforcement, the commissioner encouraged residents and property owners to move the fences on their own. If they didn’t, the commissioner threatened to levy property owners for the additional costs if the government used taxpayer money to enforce the fences.
