SENATE PASSES ESTABLISHMENT OF NORTH-WEST DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION’S BILL
The North West Development Commission law, which aims to solve the issues affecting the seven states in the geographical zone, was approved by the Senate on Thursday.
This came after the Committee on Special Duties’ report on the NWDC (Establishment) was reviewed and approved.
Barau Jibrin, the deputy president of the Senate, and twenty other legislators from the seven states in the North West geopolitical zone sponsored the bill that passed the third reading.
Sen. Shehu Kaka, a representative from Borno Central and the committee chairman, stated that the bill’s intent and purpose are strategically streamlined and well-structured for the socioeconomic development of the country’s North West geopolitical zone. He moved the motion for the presentation and consideration of the report.
He went on to say that the creation of the commission would satisfy the people’s desires and aspirations and bring the federal government closer to the North Western states.
Other geographical zones started advocating for their commissions after the establishment of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC).
The NEDC was established following the devastation of the North East by Boko Haram insurgents.
Plans are also underway to establish the South East Development Commission.
