Authorities in Chile said that on Thursday, a freight train crashed head-on with a locomotive conducting test runs on the outskirts of the country’s capital, resulting in two fatalities and nine injuries.

The state railway firm EFE reported that four Chinese nationals were hurt on the train that was conducting speed tests.

Both the freight train’s driver and his helper perished.

EFE released a statement saying, “We regret to report the death of two workers on the freight train.”

The trains crashed in the San Bernardo area, which is located outside of Santiago.

The test train was unaware that the freight train was approaching it from the north “for reasons that are unknown,” according to prosecutor Pedro Aravena.
