The Lagos State Government has put a stop to carrying goods and heavy luggage on all regulated public transport buses in the state.

This rule will start being followed on June 1, 2026.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority shared this information in a statement released on Tuesday by their Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi.

LAMATA said they made this decision because of more complaints and problems that commuters are facing.
These issues come from people using the buses to carry goods and heavy items, which has made the ride uncomfortable and less safe for passengers, and also made the service less efficient.

According to the statement, the directive was reached after a strategic meeting between LAMATA and heads of operations and maintenance of bus operating companies, where it was unanimously agreed that the practice must be halted and reorganised to ensure a balanced and sustainable system that protects commuters while supporting transport operators.

“LAMATA emphasised that the enforcement of the suspension will be strict and uncompromising. Any bus driver found violating the directive by conveying goods during the suspension period will face immediate sack and be blacklisted.

“In addition, any ground staff or LAMATA personnel at terminals or loading points found aiding, permitting, or facilitating the loading of goods onto regulated buses will be summarily dismissed without exception,” the statement read.

LAMATA emphasized that there will be no room for breaking the rules, stating the government is determined to bring back peace, safety, and smooth running in the public transport system.

They asked people using transport, bus companies, terminal staff, and the general public to follow the instructions carefully and find other ways to move goods if needed.

The organization reminded everyone of its promise to provide a safe, dependable, and userfriendly transport service for the people of Lagos.
