Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned the assault of one of its students, involving students of the University’s College of Medicine (LASUCOM), and announced the commencement of disciplinary proceedings over the incident.
The University disclosed this in a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi A. Thomas-Onashile, on Friday.
The statement followed a trending video showing an incident involving a parent and a student, which drew public attention to the matter.
LASU clarified that the incident involved some students of LASUCOM in Ikeja but occurred at a privately owned hostel outside the University’s campus premises.
According to the University, the assaulted student promptly reported the matter to the police, adding that it had since been addressed through the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
Despite the police intervention, the University said it had commenced the necessary disciplinary processes in accordance with its established rules and regulations.
“University Management unequivocally condemns this act of violence in the strongest terms,” the statement said.
It stressed that any form of assault, intimidation or harassment involving students, staff or visitors, whether within or outside the University premises, remained unacceptable and contrary to the institution’s core values.
LASU further reminded its students of the expectation to be “worthy in character and learning,” in line with the University’s mission of producing graduates who excel both academically and morally.
The University advised students to conduct themselves responsibly, avoid situations that could compromise their safety and promptly report concerns to the appropriate authorities.
It also appealed to parents to support the institution’s mission by engaging constructively with the University, respecting institutional boundaries and encouraging their wards to uphold discipline and integrity.
LASU reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the well-being, safety and academic success of its students, assuring that it would continue working to provide a secure and conducive learning environment.
