NATURAL DISASTER: 13 FEARED DEAD, 4.5 MILLION AFFECTED BY BANGLADESH FLOODS
According to the disaster management and relief ministry, floods brought on by torrential rains have killed at least 13 people in Bangladesh and affected 4.5 million more as of Friday.
With hundreds of rivers crisscrossing the 170 million-person South Asian nation, floods have been a common occurrence in recent years.
The Global Climate Risk Index lists it as one of the nations most susceptible to natural disasters and the effects of climate change.
According to a disaster ministry bulletin on Friday, “13 people have died across the country, and 4.5 million people have been affected.”
The advisory stated that approximately 190,000 more people were brought to emergency relief shelters.
According to the bulletin, the floods hit 11 out of the 64 districts in the nation.
Feni, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) northwest of the main port city of Chittagong, was worst-hit.
“It’s a catastrophic situation here,” rescue volunteer Zahed Hossain Bhuiya, 35, told AFP in Feni. “We are trying to rescue as many people as we can.”
