INSECURITY: NIGERIANS PAID N2.2 TRN AS RANSOM IN A YEAR
Nigerians paid a total of N2.2 trillion in ransom between May 2023 and April 2024, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, as the country’s level of insecurity increased.
The most recent Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report from NBS supports this.
According to the survey, households impacted by kidnapping incidents paid for this, underscoring the nation’s increasing criminal threat.
The report estimates that during the reference period, 51.89 million crime occurrences were reported in Nigerian households.
According to the poll, with 14.4 million cases reported, the North-West region had the most incidences, followed by the North-Central region with 8.8 million.
On the other hand, with 6.18 million events, the South-East area recorded the least amount of crime.
With 26.53 million crime events in rural homes compared to 25.36 million in urban areas, the survey’s results showed that crime was more prevalent in rural areas than in urban ones.
According to the research, home robberies affect 4.14 million homes, highlighting the seriousness of kidnapping.
“The average amount paid as ransom was N2,670,693, with an estimated total ransom of N2,231,772,563,507 paid within the reference period,” it highlighted.
This occurs while insecurity in Nigeria continues to escalate.
