Real Madrid have confirmed that midfielder Federico Valverde will miss Sunday’s El Clásico clash against FC Barcelona after suffering a traumatic brain injury.
In an official medical statement released on Thursday, the Spanish giants revealed that tests carried out by the club’s medical services diagnosed the Uruguay international with the injury following recent events at the club’s training ground.
“Valverde is at home in good condition and will need to rest for 10 to 14 days, as per medical protocols for this diagnosis,” the statement read.
The development comes amid reports of tensions within the Real Madrid dressing room involving Valverde and team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni.
Earlier reports from several Spanish media outlets claimed that the pair were involved in an argument during training earlier in the week, with the situation allegedly escalating after Thursday’s session.
Valverde was reportedly accompanied to a hospital facility near the club’s Valdebebas training complex by coach Alvaro Arbeloa, where he received treatment for a facial wound that reportedly required stitches.
Spanish newspaper Marca had earlier reported that the injury was accidental and not caused directly by a punch from Tchouameni.
Valverde’s absence is a major blow for Real Madrid ahead of the decisive La Liga showdown against Barcelona on Sunday, with the Catalan side sitting 11 points clear at the top of the table and needing only to avoid defeat to secure another league title.
