LAGOS STATE GOVT CONFIRMS ARREST OF 15 MINORS, 12 OTHERS FOR ‘STREET BEGGING’
The Lagos State Environmental Task Force detained the “suspects” on Tuesday night, according to a brief statement sent by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, on his verified social media account on Wednesday.
The government of Lagos State, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has stated that it has detained 15 juveniles and 12 others for engaging in street and vehicle traffic begging, for a total of 27 arrests in the state.
In a brief statement posted on his verified social media account on Wednesday, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, announced that the Lagos State Environmental Task Force had arrested the “suspects” on Tuesday night.
The commissioner said that they were arrested when the Task Force raided Awolowo Way up to Falomo roundabout, Ikoyi and Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, along Lekki road areas of the state.
He said, “The Lagos State Environmental Task Force yesterday evening, continued its raid operation against persons constituting public nuisance across the metropolis.
“Major routes raided include: Awolowo Way up to Falomo roundabout, Ikoyi and Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, along Lekki road.”
Wahab noted, “This is in a bid to arrest and get rid of destitutes and miscreants causing public nuisance in the areas.”
According to the commissioner, “27 persons including 15 minors involved in the unlawful act of street begging in the middle of vehicular traffic/hold-ups were apprehended during the operation.
“All suspects will be transferred to appropriate government facilities in line with relevant enabling laws.”
