The family of the National Flag designer, Taiwo Akinkunmi, has appealed to the Federal Government for the immortalisation of the late Akinkunmi.

This is as it requested the FG for employment for the children of the deceased.

The family’s appeal was contained in a statement by the son of the deceased, Akinkunmi Akinwumi, on Saturday.

The request came two days after it received a donation of N30m from the FG.

The Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Lanre Issa-Onilu, accompanied by the Oyo State Director of the agency, Olukemi Afolayan, had on behalf of the Federal Government, officially presented the N30m cheque to the Akinkunmi family, at their Ibadan residence.

The donation came two years after Akinkunmi’s demise.

In Saturday’s statement by the family, it urged the FG to implement the resolution of the Senate as earlier moved by the Oyo Senators at a plenary on Akinkunmi’s immortalisation.

“The family of Late Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, National Flag Designer, sincerely appreciates the thoughtfulness of the Federal Government of Nigeria for not reneging on its promise by honouring the memory of our patriarch, not minding the fact that Oyo State Government had earlier given our father and National Icon a befitting burial.

“In the same vein, while we are appealing to the government for prompt immortalization of late Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi as moved at the upper chamber by the Senator representing Oyo South senatorial district, Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, and backed by Senator Abdulfatah Buhari and Senator Yunus Akintunde, as well as Hon. Minister of Information and National Orientation during his condolence visit to the deceased’s family,” the statement read.

In addition, the family said its appeal for government employment for the deceased children is because such would “spur patriotism in many Nigerians and teach the younger generations on the need to be committed to their fatherland.”

The statement read, “It will be our greater joy, as a family, that the children of the deceased be fixed into government employment, as this will spur patriotism in many Nigerians and teach the younger generations on the need to be committed to their fatherland.

“Once again, we express our heartfelt appreciation for this timely and thoughtful support extended to us.

“It truly reflects the government’s commitment to honouring the legacy of our late father who is an icon and ensuring the well-being of his family.”
