A 39-year-old escapee from the Ilesa Correctional Centre in Osun State, Kabiru Oyedun, has been rearrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command.

Oyedun, who escaped from the facility through a breached perimeter fence, was apprehended in the Ayobo area of Lagos on Tuesday, May 21, at approximately 5:30 p.m. His arrest was confirmed on Friday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.

According to Hundeyin, the operation was carried out by officers attached to the Ayobo Division as part of ongoing preventive security measures aimed at curbing the influx of criminal elements into the state.

“This arrest is a result of proactive and preventive policing strategies implemented by the Lagos State Police Command. Kabiru Oyedun was successfully tracked and apprehended in Ayobo,” Hundeyin stated.

Authorities said Oyedun would be transferred to a Lagos correctional facility before being handed back to Osun State authorities for further action.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) had previously declared a manhunt for seven inmates who escaped from the Ilesa Medium Security Custodial Centre following a heavy downpour that damaged the prison’s perimeter wall.

To boost efforts in recapturing the fugitives, the NCoS announced a cash reward of N5 million for any information leading to the arrest of the escapees.

“The Nigerian Correctional Service is offering a reward of N5 million to anyone with useful information that can lead to the recapture of the fleeing inmates,” the agency said in an earlier statement.

The successful rearrest of Oyedun marks a breakthrough in the ongoing nationwide effort to recapture all escaped inmates and restore full security to correctional facilities across the country.
