Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has been handed a two-month suspension by Italian football authorities for illegal betting, avoiding a potential four-year ban for sporting fraud.
The incident stems from a March 11, 2024, Serie A match between Udinese and Lazio, where Okoye received a yellow card for time-wasting amid suspicious betting activity predicting that exact outcome.
Authorities flagged over ,€120,000 in winnings from bets placed mostly in Udine.
Following an investigation involving Okoye and three associates, the disciplinary commission ruled on illegal betting rather than fraud.
His suspension begins August 18, 2025, causing him to miss six Serie A games, with a return expected on October 19. Okoye, who joined Udinese from Watford in 2023, has 18 caps for Nigeria.
