Enthusiasts and advocates of the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential contender, Peter Obi, commonly referred to as the Obidients, have pledged to oppose any scheme aimed at preventing Obi from appearing on the 2027 presidential ballot.

They were reacting to a boast by Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Communication to President Bola Tinubu, that Obi would not get the ticket of any party in 2027.

Bwala, who made these assertions while appearing on Channels Television on Wednesday, stated that the former Governor of Anambra State would solely serve as a Director-General in the coalition-supported African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He further asserted that Obi had experienced a loss of 50% of his electorate in 2023, predicting that in 2027, President Tinubu would secure up to 2 million votes from the South East, an area previously regarded as Obi’s stronghold.

Bwala declared, “As I inform you, he is not going to obtain a nomination in any of the parties. That is Peter Obi. The current issue is that he may not even be able to secure the vice presidential nomination based on the current trajectory, but regardless of whether Peter Obi is a candidate of the party, he has forfeited more than 50% of his votes, as they were not votes grounded in a platform or strategy. They were based on rhetoric and division, and the Nigerian populace is becoming increasingly aware.

“You observe the South-East, I assure you, President Bola Tinubu is poised to receive more than fourfold, if not sixfold, the number of votes he previously garnered. He will acquire up to two million,” Bwala asserted.

However, in a rapid response, Dr. Chibuzor Obiesili, a member of the State Coordinating Council Collegiate team of the movement in Abia, described Bwala’s “emphatic statement that Obi would not secure any party’s nomination as dubious. ”

He challenged the presidency “to clarify the dubious remark or be held responsible for it,” emphasizing that the Obidients Movement would resolutely oppose any efforts to undermine Obi’s presidential aspirations for 2027.

“Is Bwala now suggesting that the presidency decides who receives a party nomination in 2027? ” Obiesili questioned.

He faulted Bwala’s claims that Obi had lost 50% of his South East voters, dismissing the claims as “wishful thinking and empty political hallucination”.

As stated by Obiesili, “Obi’s backing and follower base are not merely preserved but are expanding across the country. ”

“Bwala ought to cease his illusions; Obi is not diminishing in support but rather attracting an increasing following. His national allure is so genuine that even those previously uninvolved are now among the principal advocates,” he asserted.

He articulated that “the Obidients’ Movement is currently more robust within states and regions that did not extend support in 2023, having recognized the reality. ”

“In case Bwala is unaware, numerous Nigerians who were misled by the APC’s deceptive transformation in 2023 are now more compliant than the Obidients. ”

The year 2023 marked the emergence of Obi, yet 2027 is poised to witness an Obi tsunami as Nigerian voters have acquired a deeper understanding and awareness. As Bwala astutely noted during his television program, the electorate’s perception has been enlightened. They have come to recognize that the transformation advocated by the APC is not genuine change; it is merely a facade!

Furthermore, Obiesili asserted, “Bwala will be indulging in self-deception if he believes Obi will not appear on the 2027 ballots,” adding that “no one embodies presidential qualities more than Obi.”

He inquired why “Obi continues to be a source of concern for the presidency if, as Bwala and his compatriots claim, his popularity is truly diminishing. ”

“The presidency must cease its façade. It is evident that Obi’s steadily growing popularity and national acceptance have become a source of distress. However, Nigerians are steadfast in their anticipation of the impending tsunami that will bring about the desired change. ”

He emphasized that the burgeoning momentum for Obi is driven by his vision for a new Nigeria, one in which accountability, transparency, and performance are prioritized.

“The Obidients Movement is about a new Nigeria; it’s a national project to rescue Nigeria from political hijackers and reset the country; it’s a patriotic movement to make Nigeria great again! It’s a movement that is blind to tribe, religion or culture. All patriotic citizens who believe in Nigeria are queuing behind the movement,” he said.

He also told the presidency to stop making false claims of imaginary votes for Tinubu ahead of 2027, alleging that such wild claims have suspicious motives.

“Bwala’s claims of 2 million votes for Tinubu in the South East are as suspicious as Dr Nicolas Felix’s boast of 15 million votes for the President in 2027. The presidency should not forget that Tinubu lost the South East in 2023, and his policies have not made life better for the citizens in that region nor in any region to generate the imaginary millions of votes they are claiming. This is suspicious and calls for explanations.”
