The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the results of the senatorial and House of Representatives by-elections conducted on Saturday, August 16, 2025, describing the exercise as a “severe blow” to Nigeria’s democracy.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on Sunday declared Joseph Ikpea of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the Edo Central Senatorial District seat and Omosede Igbinedion of the APC winner of the Ovia Federal Constituency seat.

Reacting to the announcement, Elections Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, Chris Nehikhare, said the party would not accept the outcome being circulated by INEC, alleging that the process was marred by irregularities and deliberate sabotage.

“The so-called glitches and malfunctions were nothing but a cover-up. What we witnessed was not a technical failure but deliberate sabotage by INEC to manipulate the process in favour of the APC,” Nehikhare said in a statement issued on Sunday.

He accused the electoral umpire of lacking competence, neutrality, and moral authority to conduct credible elections, stressing that the alleged compromise rendered the exercise “an embarrassment to democracy.”

According to him, the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which guarantees election credibility, was deliberately undermined to give the APC an unfair advantage.

“In any responsible society, the management of INEC would by now have been sacked and prosecuted for repeatedly compromising the electoral process,” Nehikhare added.

The PDP insisted that Nigerians deserve elections that are transparent, free, and fair, warning that unless INEC improves its conduct, democracy in the country would remain “under siege.”
