Police operatives have arrested a 62-year-old man, Mamuda Hassan from Zaria, Zaria, over his alleged involvement in the circulation of counterfeit currency in Lafia.

The arrest was disclosed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Rahman Nansel, who said operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia acted on credible intelligence to apprehend the suspect.

According to the police, Hassan was arrested at a cattle market in Lafia while allegedly trading in fake ₦1,000 notes.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was apprehended at the cattle market in Lafia while actively trading in fake ₦1,000 denomination notes,” the statement said.

The police added that during interrogation, the suspect confessed that the counterfeit notes were supplied by an accomplice residing in Mararaba Akunza, Lafia, who is currently at large. Efforts are ongoing to track and arrest the alleged accomplice.

The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, urged members of the public—especially traders, small business owners, fuel station attendants, POS operators, and transport workers—to remain vigilant in their daily transactions.

He advised citizens to watch out for signs of counterfeit currency, including poor print quality, smaller note size, duplicated serial numbers, and the absence of standard security features.

The commissioner also encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity involving fake currency to the nearest police station, assuring that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
