The Defence Headquarters has announced that Nigerian troops, in collaboration with the United States Africa Command, killed more than 20 ISWAP fighters in a coordinated air operation in the North-East.
According to the military, the strikes took place around Metele after intelligence reports indicated the movement and gathering of terrorist elements in the area.
This was disclosed in a statement on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba.
The statement said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and deny insurgents safe havens across Nigeria. It added that the air raids specifically targeted ISWAP fighters who were seen regrouping before the attack.
The DHQ described the outcome as a significant success in the counter-insurgency campaign, noting that over 20 terrorists were neutralised.
It further stated that the Armed Forces, working with US Africa Command, would sustain operations aimed at degrading terrorist capabilities in the North-East.
According to the military, the broader objective is to disrupt movements, eliminate fighters on the battlefield, and prevent regrouping activities. Maj.-Gen. Uba also reaffirmed that terrorists would not be allowed any safe haven in the country, stressing the military’s commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The operation comes amid continued security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, following recent reports of a joint strike that eliminated a senior ISIS-linked commander in the region.
