SHEHU SANI WARNS: WHY JONATHAN MUST STAY OUT OF THE 2027 RACE

A former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central, Senator Shehu Sani, has counseled ex-President Goodluck Jonathan against pursuing candidacy in the 2027 presidential election, cautioning that the political environment has significantly altered from what it once was.
Speculations regarding Jonathan’s re-entry into politics have continued to proliferate within political circles, particularly amid ongoing discussions about a single-term Southern presidency and the formation of a new opposition alliance introduced by the African Democratic Congress.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Sani contended that the Peoples Democratic Party, through which Jonathan achieved victory in 2011, is now divided and diminished.
“Whenever an election approaches, Jonathan’s name resurfaces, yet it is ultimately his choice to run; however, I advise against it. The reasoning is straightforward: the PDP he once knew is not the PDP of today. ”
“The PDP in the South-West is endorsing the president. Some members of the party are in the coalition. So, it is the party he used to know, so he shouldn’t waste his time,” he said.
Sani additionally downplayed the robustness of the nascent coalition, emphasizing that its constituents lack ideological substance and do not differ from President Bola Tinubu’s political ideology.
“We are in a democratic system, and it is within the prerogative and scope of our democratic endeavor or legislation to have an opposition that will offer an alternative. However, if their sole objective for power is to displace Tinubu without presenting any alternative to governance and his approach, then they possess no agenda. ”
The individuals who make up the coalition today are not fundamentally divergent in ideology and philosophy from the initiatives that the Tinubu administration is implementing. Therefore, it is not accurate to suggest that we have a Marxist juxtaposed with a Capitalist, or a Neo-Liberal positioned against a Conservative.
“Throughout their campaigns and in their daily existence, one can observe those progressive values of currency devaluation and the elimination of subsidies, along with other measures,” he added
