The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has launched a new initiative known as the Media Traffic Mayor to support its officers in improving traffic order and mobility across the state.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, announced the scheme in a statement on Sunday, describing it as a strategic move to strengthen the agency’s efforts in ensuring safety and smooth traffic flow in Lagos.

According to him, the initiative blends media advocacy with operational enforcement by leveraging the influence of journalists to enhance public compliance, promote civic enlightenment, and encourage positive behavioural change among road users.

“This pioneering scheme represents an unprecedented synthesis of media advocacy and operational enforcement, strategically leveraging the communicative authority of the press to stimulate heightened public compliance,” Bakare-Oki said.

He explained that under the collaborative framework, media professionals would act as Traffic Mayors, working alongside LASTMA officers to sensitise motorists, amplify traffic advisories, counter misinformation, and model lawful conduct on Lagos roads.

Bakare-Oki described the initiative as a milestone in traffic governance, highlighting the media’s role as architects of public consciousness and agents of societal transformation.

The Director of Traffic Advocacy and Special Mayor, Mr. Awoyemi Jimmy, added that traffic management in a megacity like Lagos could not rely on enforcement alone but must be anchored on partnerships with thought leaders, media professionals, and civic stakeholders.

He further noted that the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to deploying multifaceted solutions that guarantee seamless urban mobility, enhance productivity, and safeguard the dignity of residents navigating the state.
