The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed allegations by Labour Party governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, that the police are working with All Progressives Congress (APC) thugs to create a one-party state.

The rebuttal followed Rhodes-Vivour’s appearance on Arise News’ The Morning Show on Sunday, where he accused the police of colluding with political thugs in Lagos.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babasuyi Oluseyi, the Command described the claims as “unfounded and misleading,” insisting that recent police deployments in Alimosho Local Government Area were solely to maintain law and order.

According to the statement, the APC had duly informed the police about its sensitisation programme on continuous voter registration, which was held peacefully on Saturday at Lion Field, Iyana-Ipaja, under full police protection. The police, however, maintained that no notification was received from Rhodes-Vivour about any planned rally in the area.

The Command said that during a separate operation on the same day, distress calls were received about a disturbance at the Christ Gospel Mission International Campground, where a political gathering was allegedly being forcefully held without the church’s consent. Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori reportedly led a team to restore order and secure the premises.

The statement rejected Rhodes-Vivour’s claims that a Deputy Commissioner was reduced to a gateman at the event, or that coaster buses were damaged. It further criticised him for what it called a “sacrilegious intrusion” into a place of worship for political purposes, warning that such actions could attract criminal liability.

The Command also noted that more than 30 hours after the incident, no official report of injuries or property damage had been filed with the police.

Reiterating its neutrality, the Lagos Police Command stressed its commitment to protecting lives and property while remaining apolitical, vowing to resist any attempt to drag the Force into partisan politics.
