The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 46-year-old man, Jude Onouha, identified as the leader of a notorious gang that specialized in vandalizing exotic vehicles within estates across Lagos.

This was revealed in a statement on Saturday, signed by the command’s Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi B. Oluseyi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh.

According to the Command, Onouha and his gang disguised as security operatives in fake uniforms and used a Mercedes-Benz car jack modified to resemble a firearm to gain entry into residential estates.

Once inside, they targeted luxury vehicles such as Toyota Hilux, Toyota Highlander, Lexus 650, Mercedes-Benz, and other SUVs, stripping them of brainboxes, wiring systems, tapping glasses, side mirrors, and control devices.

Recovered from the suspect were a Mercedes-Benz car jack and a face cap inscribed Special Force, which he allegedly used to pose as a security operative.

The police confirmed that Onouha had confessed to the crime and was assisting detectives with ongoing investigations, while efforts were being intensified to arrest other members of the syndicate.

“The suspect and his gang specialized in disguising themselves as security operatives, wearing fake uniforms and using a modified Mercedes-Benz car jack, crafted to resemble a firearm, to deceive unsuspecting estate security personnel.”

The Command advised estate managers and residents to exercise vigilance when approached by individuals claiming to be security operatives.

“In addition to basic verification, residents are urged to collaborate closely with the Police by contacting the Divisional Police Officer covering their area to confirm the authenticity of any such security personnel before granting them access,” the statement added.

CP Jimoh also urged the public to make use of the Command’s emergency lines — 08063299264, 09053872208, and 08087332678 — for quick intervention.

He assured Lagos residents that “together, through vigilance, cooperation, and timely reporting, the safety and security of all communities in Lagos State will be strengthened.”
