The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered a continuous and discreet investigation into the mysterious death of a 17-year-old apprentice, identified as Chikamso Ejiofor, who was reportedly found lifeless in a compound at Umuzocha, Awka South Local Government Area.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the spokesman for the state police command, Tochukwu Ikenga.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on October 5, 2025, and was reported to the police the same day. Preliminary investigations revealed that at about 10:55 a.m., a resident returned home from a church vigil and discovered the body of the deceased in her compound.

Police operatives from the Central Police Station, Awka, immediately visited the scene, took photographs, and conveyed the victim to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

Further investigation led to the identification of the deceased as an apprentice, after which his parents were contacted. The family later informed the police of their decision not to pursue the case further, citing their awareness of the boy’s alleged unruly behaviour. They also swore an affidavit and submitted a formal withdrawal letter to that effect.

However, Commissioner Orutugu emphasized that the police have a legal duty to investigate all cases of unnatural death, regardless of a family’s position.

“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has directed a continuous and discreet investigation to ascertain the true cause of death of the 17-year-old apprentice,” the statement read in part.

He instructed the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka to carry out a thorough review of the incident to determine the actual cause of death and ensure transparency in the process.
