Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has been appointed chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund by the state government.

The announcement was made by the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Prince Kola Adewusi, during a meeting with the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Osogbo. Adewusi said the move was part of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s plan to reposition sports in the state through innovative funding and private sector collaboration.

According to him, the Sports Trust Fund will attract contributions from philanthropists, corporate organisations, and sports enthusiasts to support infrastructure development, athlete welfare, and talent discovery. He added that the initiative would ensure a sustainable and transparent model for financing sports activities across Osun.

The deputy governor also disclosed that the state government had begun the renovation of the Osogbo Township Stadium, with plans to upgrade it to Olympic standards. He said the facility, when completed, would be able to host national and international sporting events.

Adewusi further revealed that the government was finalising plans to establish the Osun State Sports Commission, which will coordinate all sporting activities in the state and implement related policies.

He described Davido’s appointment as a strategic choice, saying the global music star’s influence and network would help attract investors and raise the profile of Osun sports.

Davido, who hails from Ede in Osun State, reportedly accepted the appointment with enthusiasm and pledged to contribute to the development of sports in the state.

The appointment has sparked conversations among residents and sports enthusiasts, with many describing it as a bold move that could inject fresh energy into Osun’s sports sector.

If the initiative succeeds, it could serve as a model for other states seeking sustainable ways to fund and promote sports development in Nigeria.
