The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has suspended its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, over allegations of financial misconduct, misappropriation of party funds, and gross abuse of office.

Also suspended were the party’s National Auditor, Nnadi Clarkson, and National Youth Leader, Chukwuma Uchechukwu.

Their suspension was announced in a statement on Thursday by the National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba, following a resolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting held at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

According to the statement, the disciplinary action was taken in line with the powers conferred on the NWC under Articles 19.1, 19.3(1), and 19.5 of the SDP Constitution (2022 as amended).

“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party, in exercise of its exclusive powers, placed the following officers on suspension on grounds of misconduct, financial misappropriation, malfeasance, fraudulent activities, and gross abuse of office,” the statement read.

The party said the decision followed the adoption of the Disciplinary Committee’s report and a White Paper which reviewed the findings and recommendations on the allegations against the affected officers.

Aiyenigba added that the sanctions were necessary to “restore integrity, discipline, and internal order within the SDP.”

He further stated that the NWC had also adopted additional administrative measures from the White Paper to prevent future violations of the party’s constitution and code of conduct.

Meanwhile, the party condemned the actions of some “nonconforming and disloyal” members who allegedly forcibly gained entry into the SDP National Secretariat in July 2025.“These daring intruders were caught in the act by law enforcement agents and arrested with sensitive party documents and valuables. They are currently facing prosecution in court,” the statement added.

The SDP reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and internal democracy, stressing that no member would be above the law of the party.
