Aston Villa’s flawless Europa League start came to an abrupt end on Thursday night as they slumped to a shocking 2-1 defeat to Dutch debutants Go Ahead Eagles, while new Rangers boss Danny Rohl endured a torrid 3-0 loss to Brann in his first game in charge.

Villa, tipped as tournament favourites after victories over Bologna and Feyenoord, looked on course for another comfortable win when Evann Guessand netted his first goal for the club.

However, in wild, rain-swept conditions, the hosts mounted an inspired comeback. Mathis Suray’s deflected strike brought them level before Mats Deijl chipped past Emiliano Martinez to complete a memorable victory in their maiden group-stage campaign.

Villa’s misery deepened late on when Emi Buendia, Sunday’s Premier League hero against Tottenham, missed a penalty that would have rescued a point.

In Norway, Rangers’ European hopes continued to unravel as they suffered a third straight defeat, leaving them bottom of the new 36-team Europa League format.

Goals from Emil Kornvig, Jacob Sorensen, and Noah Holm condemned Rohl’s men to their first-ever loss to Norwegian opposition, exposing familiar defensive frailties despite the managerial change.

Elsewhere, Sean Dyche prepares to oversee his first European game with Nottingham Forest against Porto, aiming to revive their continental campaign after sacking Ange Postecoglou last weekend.

In other fixtures, Lyon maintained their perfect start with a 2-0 win over Basel, courtesy of Corentin Tolisso and Afonso Moreira, while Braga joined them on three wins from three after beating Red Star Belgrade 2-0.

Bologna edged Steaua Bucharest 2-1, Fenerbahce defeated Stuttgart 1-0, and Real Betis were held to a goalless draw at Genk, as the Europa League’s league phase continued to deliver surprises across Europe.
