At least four people were killed in Israeli air strikes targeting eastern and southern Lebanon on Thursday, according to Lebanon’s health ministry, as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to escalate despite a ceasefire agreement.

The ministry reported that initial strikes on mountainous areas in the Bekaa region, near the Syrian border, left two people dead, while a separate attack around Nabatieh in the south claimed two more lives, including an elderly woman, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).

The NNA said Israeli warplanes “launched a series of violent strikes on the eastern mountain range” and later targeted the Hermel range in northeast Lebanon.

The Israeli military confirmed the attacks, saying it struck Hezbollah sites in east and north Lebanon, including “a military camp and a site for the production of precision missiles” in the Bekaa Valley. It added that a Hezbollah weapons storage facility was also destroyed in Nabatieh.

Israel has continued to carry out air raids in Lebanon despite a November ceasefire that ended more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah a conflict that escalated into two months of open warfare.

As part of that ceasefire deal, Israeli forces were expected to withdraw from southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah was to dismantle its regional forces.

However, under U.S. diplomatic pressure and growing fears of renewed conflict, the Lebanese government has begun efforts to disarm Hezbollah a move the powerful militant group and its political allies have fiercely rejected.
