A wave of outrage has followed the tragic death of Mr. Adegoke Fatai, a dedicated teacher in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, who was allegedly beaten to death by his own students while trying to stop them from gambling during school hours.

According to reports, the incident occurred when Mr. Fatai intervened to discipline a group of students caught gambling within the school premises. The students, however, turned on him, subjecting him to a brutal assault that left him with severe injuries, including broken limbs. He later succumbed to his wounds.

Reacting to the development, concerned educators and community members have condemned the act, describing it as a disturbing reflection of the moral decline among students and the erosion of discipline in schools.

In a statement expressing deep pain and anger, a teacher advocate said the attack was “not just an assault on one man, but an attack on the entire teaching profession.”

“A teacher who stood for discipline and integrity was beaten, had his limbs broken, and eventually died from his injuries. What a painful reflection of moral decay and loss of values in our schools and homes!” the statement read.

The teacher further called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Ogbomoso Zone, the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators and their parents to justice.

“Those students must be arrested, prosecuted, and made to face the full weight of the law. Their parents, too, must not escape responsibility. Silence at this moment is complicity,” the statement added.

The statement emphasized that teachers deserve protection, respect, and dignity in the discharge of their duties, urging that Mr. Fatai’s death should mark the end of violence against educators in Nigeria.

“Teachers are not slaves. We are nation builders deserving of protection, respect, and dignity in the line of duty. Let this be the last time any teacher’s blood is shed in vain. Justice for Mr. Adegoke Fatai! Justice for the teaching profession!”
