Barely 24 hours after a dispatch rider was killed by a hit-and-run driver along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, another rider has lost his life in a tragic accident involving a containerised articulated truck in the Ilupeju area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to the agency, the fatal accident occurred along the Ilupeju Bypass after the dispatch rider allegedly engaged in a struggle for right of way with a commercial minibus, popularly known as “Korope.”

Preliminary investigations revealed that the rider lost control of the motorcycle during the altercation and crashed into a moving articulated trailer along the busy corridor.

“Preliminary security investigations disclosed that the tragic incident ensued after the dispatch rider reportedly engaged in a dangerous struggle for right of way with a commercial mini bus, popularly known as ‘Korope,’ before losing control of the motorcycle and crashing into a moving articulated trailer along the ever-busy Ilupeju corridor,” Taofiq stated.

“The severe impact of the collision resulted in fatal injuries, culminating in the instantaneous death of the rider at the scene,” he added.

LASTMA said its operatives stationed around the Mushin axis quickly responded to distress calls and immediately commenced rescue and traffic management operations to ease congestion caused by the crash.

The agency disclosed that officials recovered the remains of the deceased rider, which had been trapped beneath the articulated truck, while other emergency responders worked to restore normal traffic flow in the area.

“LASTMA officials worked tirelessly in synergy with other emergency response agencies to contain the resultant traffic backlog while simultaneously ensuring public safety, security and orderliness throughout the duration of the rescue and evacuation exercise,” the statement added.

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental Health Management Unit were also contacted to evacuate the corpse from the scene.

The wreckage of the motorcycle and the articulated truck involved in the accident were subsequently handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, sympathised with the family of the deceased and urged motorists, particularly articulated vehicle operators and dispatch riders, to adhere strictly to traffic regulations.

“The essence of the recently concluded stakeholders’ engagement with courier and dispatch riders was fundamentally to sensitise and further educate operators on the imperative of safety consciousness, strict compliance with government prescribed speed limits and adherence to extant traffic regulations in order to avert needless loss of lives on our roads,” Bakare-Oki said.

The latest tragedy comes barely a day after another dispatch rider was reportedly killed by a wrong-way driver at the Magboro Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, with the driver fleeing the scene immediately after the incident.
