GUNMEN KILL POPULAR COMEDIAN, ONE OTHER IN ANAMBRA

Two people, including a popular comedian and media personality, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as Aiza Nwosu, were reportedly killed by unidentified gunmen in Awka, the Anambra State capital, on Sunday night.
The victims were said to have been attacked at separate locations by the same assailants.
Nwosu was reportedly shot along S.M. Okeke Street in Amaikwo, Awka, while the other victim, a middle-aged man whose identity was yet to be established, was killed along Capital City Road, Amaenyi.
The motive behind the attacks remained unknown as of press time, although the shootings reportedly caused panic in the affected areas, with residents fleeing for safety as gunshots rang out.
An eyewitness said the assailants, reportedly three men travelling in a tinted vehicle, allegedly followed the comedian from his residence before double-crossing his vehicle and opening fire.
“The assailants, numbering about three and driving in a tinted vehicle, trailed the comedian from his home, double-crossed his vehicle and later attacked him, shooting him dead. They left the victim in a pool of blood inside his car,” the eyewitness said.
The witness added that the gunmen later moved to another location, where they allegedly shot the second victim, dispossessed him of his belongings and fled.
“They fired some shots into the air before leaving the scene in a commando-like manner, thereby creating tension in the area. After they left, the security operatives arrived at the scene and recovered the lifeless bodies of the victims,” the witness added.
Although the motive for the killings had not been established, some residents and eyewitnesses reportedly suspected that the attacks could be linked to cult-related activities.
Videos circulating online also showed the bodies of the victims lying at the separate crime scenes as residents gathered around the areas.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had launched an investigation and intensified efforts to apprehend those responsible.
Ikenga said preliminary information indicated that three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla were responsible for the attacks.
He said the vehicle’s registration number had yet to be ascertained.
According to the police spokesperson, security operatives were immediately deployed to the affected areas after receiving distress calls and began efforts to track down the suspects.
“The Anambra State Police Command has condemned in the strongest terms the gunshot attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in Awka, the State capital, on Sunday, August 30, 2026, which resulted in the deaths of two persons,” Ikenga said.
He added that the bodies were recovered from Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, and taken to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed them dead.
While one victim remained unidentified, police identified the second as Isaac Nwosu, also known as Aiza.
Police operatives reportedly recovered ₦7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scene.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Ama, condemned the killings, describing them as unacceptable and a threat to the peace and security of the state.
He directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a discreet and thorough investigation.
The police commissioner also ordered increased patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and neighbouring communities.
The command appealed to community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and other members of the public with useful information about the suspects, their movements or the vehicle used in the attacks to contact the police.
The police assured members of the public that such information would be treated confidentially and stressed the importance of community cooperation in tracking down the perpetrators and preventing further attacks.
