WOMAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY SMUGGLING DRUGS INTO OGUN PRISON FOR SON ON DEATH ROW

The Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has arrested a woman, Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi, for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta, for her son, Dare Sowunmi, who is on death row.
The command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Odukoya, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.
According to Odukoya, Sowunmi was arrested around 1:33 pm on Friday, August 28, 2026, during a routine screening at the main entrance of the correctional facility.
He said security personnel discovered a substance suspected to be “Colos”, a psychoactive synthetic drug, concealed inside a sachet of a popular beverage powder.
The substance was allegedly intended for Dare Sowunmi, an inmate awaiting execution at the facility.
Odukoya said the woman was immediately detained following the discovery and subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Abioye Adesina, commended the officers for their vigilance and strict adherence to security procedures.
Adesina reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and the introduction of contraband into custodial facilities.
He warned that attempts to compromise security within correctional centres would attract appropriate legal action.
The command also urged members of the public to respect the integrity of custodial institutions and warned that anyone found attempting to undermine security would face the full weight of the law.
