The Social Democratic Party (SDP) former presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, on Thursday suggested that there are government-backed infiltrators within the party.
Adebayo warned that such “moles” operating within the party would face serious, long-term consequences.
He made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Hard Copy, where he spoke about alleged infiltration of opposition parties, including claims of President Bola Tinubu’s involvement.
Responding to questions on the issue, he said infiltration of opposition parties is a long-standing practice in Nigerian politics.
“It’s a standard practice for the ruling party, not only President Tinubu. Before then, during the PDP era, right from Obasanjo’s time, there were always attempts to influence other parties,” he said.
Adebayo added that such actors would always exist, stressing the importance of strong leadership to prevent party members from being used for transactional politics.
According to him, individuals who allow themselves to be influenced for short-term gains such as money or attention would face “generational consequences.”
He also warned that Nigeria’s current challenges require serious political engagement, not distractions.
“Nigeria has no room for drama because we are facing existential challenges,” he said, urging politicians to focus on meaningful contributions.
Adebayo further noted that economic hardship, including rising fuel costs and widespread poverty, is worsening public frustration across the country.
