INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES: LAGOS CELEBRATES ABILITY IN DISABILITY WITH COLOURFUL DISPLAY

‎Lagos State on Wednesday joined the rest of the world to mark the 18th edition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with a vibrant celebration that showcased the talents, resilience and capabilities of learners with special needs across the state.

The event, attended by 52 inclusive schools and five special schools, including private institutions, featured an impressive match-past and captivating cultural dance performances by students who demonstrated that disability is not a limitation but a form of human diversity.

‎Representing the Head of Service, Lagos State, Mr. Shuaib Olabode Agoro, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tertiary Education, Mr. Kasali Adeniran, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to building an inclusive society where no learner is left behind.

‎He noted that the theme of the celebration “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress” aligns with the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which emphasises social inclusion, gender equality and youth development.

‎Adeniran praised the outstanding performances of the participating schools, describing them as proof that “there is ability in disability.” He emphasised the need for continuous support, awareness creation and policy implementation to ensure that persons with disabilities enjoy full participation and equal opportunities in society.

‎Also speaking, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Abosede Williams, Director, Child Care, School Counselling and Special Education Unit, highlighted Lagos State’s commitment to inclusive education, stressing that every child regardless of their ability deserves recognition, celebration and equal access to learning.

According to her, the excitement and engagement seen in the students’ performances reflect the dedication of teachers, caregivers and inclusive education stakeholders across the state.

The Ministry of Science and Technology, represented by Mr. Amzal Wahab, pledged increased efforts towards designing and developing assistive learning devices to strengthen teaching and learning processes in special and inclusive schools.

‎One of the awardees at the event, Mrs. Omotunde Morufat Omolayo, Head Teacher, Ojuwoye Community Primary School Inclusive Unit, Mushin, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for recognising individuals committed to supporting learners with disabilities. She described the recognition as a motivation to continue the work of nurturing children with special needs.

‎The celebration reinforced the Lagos State Government’s message of unity, equal opportunity and societal acceptance. Through its expansive network of over 50 inclusive schools and multiple special schools, the state continues to provide the structures, resources and platforms that allow learners with disabilities to thrive.

‎The event concluded with renewed calls to parents and communities to support, encourage and expose children living with disabilities so they can reach their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
