Beşiktaş midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been appointed the new captain of the Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The appointment was confirmed on Friday via an official post on the Super Eagles’ social media platforms, which quoted Ndidi as describing the captaincy as a responsibility that “means everything” as Nigeria prepares for the continental showpiece.

Ndidi will lead the three-time African champions in their quest for a fourth AFCON title in Morocco, with his first major assignment coming at the tournament scheduled to kick off later this month.

Speaking to the Super Eagles media team, the former Leicester City midfielder emphasised unity and collective effort as key to Nigeria’s success.

“It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly,” Ndidi said.

“I’ve had conversations with some of the older players to help everyone understand why we’re here. You also need the support of the staff. We’re all in this together.”

Ndidi’s emergence as captain follows the retirement of stand-in skipper William Troost-Ekong and long-serving leader Ahmed Musa. Musa has not featured for the national team in several months and was an unused substitute at the 2023 AFCON, while Troost-Ekong’s decision to retire came as a surprise to many supporters.

The former Watford defender had been named in Nigeria’s preliminary squad for the 2025 AFCON but announced his retirement from international football before the final squad list was released.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group C of the tournament, where they will face Tanzania, Uganda and Tunisia. The Super Eagles will open their campaign on December 23 as they aim to reclaim continental glory.
