Four persons have lost their lives after a Golf Wagon vehicle plunged into Tomas Dam in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State on Tuesday evening.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement released on Wednesday by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the accident occurred around 7:10 p.m. after the Danbatta Fire Service Division received an emergency call from a resident identified as Suleman.
Abdullahi explained that the vehicle, whose registration number could not be identified, was travelling from Kano to Roni in Jigawa State when it veered off the road and crashed into the dam.
The statement noted that 10 persons were involved in the accident.
It added that firefighters from the Danbatta Fire Station responded swiftly to the scene and successfully rescued all occupants from the submerged vehicle.
However, four of the victims who were pulled out unconscious were later confirmed dead.
The deceased were identified as Shamsiya Miko, believed to be about 35 years old, and Fatima Danlami, aged around 40, while the identities of two other victims had yet to be established at the time of reporting.
Abdullahi said all victims were evacuated to Danbatta General Hospital for medical treatment and other necessary procedures.
Preliminary findings by the fire service indicated that the accident was caused by a tyre burst.
“The incident involved 10 persons, and our personnel responded immediately after receiving the distress call,” the statement said.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, urged motorists to drive cautiously, particularly on highways and around waterways, to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.
He also appealed to the relevant authorities to urgently repair the Tomas Dam embankment to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“There is an urgent need for the appropriate authorities to repair the Tomas Dam embankment in order to protect lives and property,” Anas stated.
The incident comes days after two people died in a separate road crash involving a trailer and a Toyota Corolla in Kwang community, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, where five persons were involved.
