No fewer than 45 beggars have been arrested across different parts of Lagos State as authorities intensified enforcement and mop-up operations to curb street begging and restore public order.

According to officials, 17 beggars were apprehended in Alimosho, while 12 were arrested in Agege during the initial phase of the operation. In a follow-up exercise, another 10 beggars were picked up again in Alimosho, with six more arrested in Oshodi.

The arrests, the authorities said, are in line with the state government’s zero-tolerance policy on street begging, which is considered an environmental nuisance and a threat to public safety.

Officials noted that begging along highways, road medians, and public spaces exposes both the beggars and motorists to avoidable dangers, disrupts traffic flow, and undermines public order.

The enforcement teams reiterated the government’s commitment to sustaining the exercise across the state, warning that street begging will continue to attract strict sanctions as part of efforts to ensure a cleaner, safer, and more orderly Lagos.
