The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Imo State has strengthened its political standing with the high-profile defection of prominent leaders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), signaling growing confidence in the party’s leadership, structure, and reform-driven agenda.
Notable figures who formally joined the ADC include Hon. Chief Mrs. Ifeyinwa Arodiogbo, South-East Zonal Woman Leader of the PDP; Hon. Chief Innocent NwaDavid, Imo State Chairman of the Labour Party; Hon. Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Njoku, former Commissioner and leading member of the Obidient Movement; and Chief Paul Mbadiwe, son of the late nationalist and statesman Chief K.O. Mbadiwe. Their entry, alongside other key entrants, marks a significant realignment in Imo State’s political landscape.
The defections were announced during the ADC Imo State Mega Stakeholders’ Summit held on Tuesday at the party’s State Secretariat in Owerri. The summit, chaired by former Governor and former Minister of Commerce and Industry, Chief Achike Udenwa, drew a wide array of political, economic, and social leaders, including former governors, current and former legislators, captains of industry, clergy, traditional rulers, women and youth leaders, artisans, civil society actors, party faithful, and grassroots mobilizers from across the state’s 305 wards.
Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and former Governor of Imo State, formally presented the defectors to the party. He praised the Professor James Okoroma–led State Executive Committee, describing the ADC in Imo State as a disciplined, cohesive, and strategically organized structure capable of driving meaningful political change.
In separate statements, the defectors highlighted their confidence in the ADC’s leadership, internal democracy, and ideological clarity. Hon. Chief Mrs. Ifeyinwa Arodiogbo described her defection as a “return to family,” while Hon. Chief Innocent NwaDavid said his move aligns with the broader political direction championed by Mr. Peter Obi and that he would lead the Labour Party structure in Imo State into the ADC. Hon. Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Njoku characterized the ADC as a credible platform capable of delivering alternative, people-oriented governance, while Chief Paul Mbadiwe cited integrity, service, and national responsibility as guiding principles for his decision.
Responding on behalf of the party, State Chairman Professor James Okoroma expressed profound appreciation to party leaders, stakeholders, and members for their commitment to strengthening the ADC across all 305 wards of the state. He also acknowledged the support of Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, Chief Achike Udenwa, Engr. Gerald Irona, and Hon. Sir Bon Unachukwu, emphasizing that the party is being strategically positioned for effective and competitive participation in the 2027 general elections.
