COAS, OTHERS RECEIVE GALLANTRY AND SERVICE AWARDS FROM FG

The Federal Government has honoured senior officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for gallantry, sacrifice, innovation, and contributions to national security. The awards were presented at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day Gala in Abuja.
COAS Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu received the Service and Sacrifice Award for exemplary leadership in counter-insurgency and internal security operations. Former COAS, retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, was also honoured under the Legacy Award for reforms and operational expansion during his tenure, as well as his diplomatic service in Benin.
Other Service and Sacrifice Award recipients included Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and Maj.-Gen. Faruk Mijinyawa. Brig.-Gen. Musa Uba won the Gallantry Award, while Brig.-Gen. Usman Ahmad received the Mission Success Award. Col. Ibrahim Mohammed-Gero earned the Innovation Award for redesigning a ballistic gunboat.

Posthumous awards went to Col. B. Umaru (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Excellence) and Lt.-Col. Thomas Ebisingha-Alari (Fallen Heroes). Retired Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman and Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Aliyu received the Sentinel of Freedom and Phoenix Awards, respectively.
Defence Minister retired Gen. Christopher Musa highlighted that the awards reflect courage, quiet sacrifice, and commitment to duty. He paid tribute to fallen heroes’ families and military veterans for their enduring contributions.
Buratai thanked President Bola Tinubu and the Ministry of Defence for recognising professionalism, gallantry, and sacrifice, describing the gala as a historic tribute to both serving and fallen personnel.
The event featured multiple award categories and celebrated the role of the Armed Forces in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty.
