The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), agreeing to a 40 percent salary increase and enhanced allowances for university lecturers.
Speaking at the unveiling of the agreement, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, explained that the 40 percent increment will be reflected through the consolidated academic tools allowance.
Alausa noted that the consolidated allowance covers essential academic needs, including journal publications, conference participation, internet access, professional society memberships, and book allowances. He emphasized that these provisions are designed to equip lecturers with the critical tools necessary for effective teaching, research, and global academic competitiveness.
He added, “The head academic allowance, now restructured into nine components, is directly linked to duties performed, promoting productivity, accountability, and fairness. The allowances also include enhanced support for postgraduate supervision, fieldwork, clinical duties, examination moderation, and leadership roles within tertiary education institutions.”
