Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has condemned the deaths of Stephen Onyeka Omatu, Casmir Nnabuike Omatu, and Collins Kenechukwu Omatu in the Great Nigeria Insurance building fire in Lagos, describing the tragedy as a stark reflection of Nigeria’s failed emergency response system.
Obi, who attended the burial of the three brothers, said the incident exposed systemic lapses that continue to endanger Nigerian lives. In a statement personally signed by him, the former governor stressed that the tragedy went beyond a family’s grief, highlighting institutional neglect and unpreparedness.
“For days, these young men were trapped in the burning building, sending desperate pleas for help, yet no emergency services came to their aid. Their bodies were only recovered several days later,” Obi said.

He added, “This is not just a devastating loss for the Omatu family; it is a national loss. Their deaths are a painful reminder of the urgent need to strengthen our emergency response systems to ensure they are accessible, responsive, and effective for every citizen. Every life matters, and no Nigerian should be left to perish in such a manner when timely help could and should have been provided.”
Obi also offered prayers for the deceased and their family while calling on authorities and citizens to work together to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
