The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced the rescue of an 81-year-old man from a suspected fraud syndicate operating in Uyo and surrounding areas.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, made this known on Wednesday in a statement issued to journalists in Uyo. She said three suspected members of the syndicate were arrested during an operation carried out on Tuesday.

According to the police spokesperson, the arrests followed a tip-off from a concerned citizen regarding the activities of the suspects, who allegedly used tricycles to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

John explained that on February 3, at about 3:30 p.m., police operatives acted on credible intelligence and successfully dismantled the syndicate within Uyo. The information revealed that the group specialised in luring victims with an operational tricycle before using deceptive and other unlawful means to dispossess them of cash and valuables.

She said operatives swiftly moved in and arrested three suspects, recovering the tricycle used for the operation, with registration number UFG-886-QA.

The PPRO added that the suspects confessed to the crime, admitting they had fraudulently obtained money and property from several victims in Uyo and its environs.

John noted that investigations are ongoing to identify additional victims, obtain their statements, and apprehend other members of the syndicate still at large.
