Engr. Abdulrahman Leke Yusuf has emerged as the new Chairman of the 1985 Set of the Government College Ibadan Old Boys’ Association (GCIOBA) following an election held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the GCIOBA House, Lalekan Are Hall, Apata, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The election took place during the set’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and marked a peaceful leadership transition within the association. The chairmanship position carries a two-year tenure, renewable for a maximum of two terms.
In his acceptance speech, Yusuf described his emergence as a collective mandate rather than a personal victory, stating, “Today is not about who won an election. It is about GCIOBA 85 choosing its path forward.”
He added, “From this moment, we move as one united body,” pledging servant leadership anchored on unity, transparency, and shared responsibility among members.
Outlining his vision, the new chairman said his administration would focus on building “a more united, structured, and responsive GCIOBA 85 set where no member feels isolated or overlooked.”
According to him, priorities of the new leadership include a structured welfare and emergency support system, confidential assistance channels, health and financial awareness initiatives, mentorship programmes, sustained alumni engagement, and continued contributions to the development of Government College Ibadan.
“These initiatives are not acts of charity. They are expressions of responsibility. They are unity in action,” he said.
Earlier, the outgoing chairman, Engr. Bukola Alabi described the occasion as a defining moment for the association, noting that members gathered “in peace, harmony, and unity, not in crisis, not in conflict.”
Reviewing his administration’s stewardship, Alabi highlighted key achievements, including financial reforms that transitioned the association to internet banking, settlement of statutory obligations dating back to 2017, modernization of secretariat operations, and expansion of welfare interventions for members.
He disclosed that close to ₦10 million was expended on welfare support covering medical needs, business assistance, and family interventions, while a scholarship programme introduced during his tenure was consistently sustained.
The administration also completed the GCI Command Centre as a legacy project and successfully hosted the set’s 40th anniversary celebration in October 2025, during which several projects were commissioned within the school.
Alabi urged members to sustain unity beyond leadership contests, declaring, “Let us say NO to division. Let us say YES to unity,” adding that “This election is not about winners or losers. It is about fulfilling our constitution and continuing to position the 85 Set as a shining light.”
Highlights from the AGM showed steady institutional growth, including improved financial accountability, strengthened welfare structures, and active participation of members across Nigeria and the diaspora, particularly in Europe and North America. Reports presented at the meeting also reflected strong fundraising efforts toward anniversary projects and sustained engagement in global GCIOBA programmes.
The meeting concluded with members reaffirming commitment to brotherhood, collective progress, and continued support for their alma mater, as the newly elected leadership begins a fresh two-year mandate.
