ARMED MAN SHOT NEAR WHITE HOUSE AS SECRET SERVICE RESPONDS TO GUNFIRE INCIDENT
Agency Report

An armed man was shot by agents of the United States Secret Service in downtown Washington on Monday, triggering a brief lockdown around the White House, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred near the National Mall shortly after a motorcade carrying Vice President JD Vance had passed through the area.
USSS Deputy Director Matthew Quinn said authorities do not believe the vice president was the intended target, adding that it remains unclear whether the incident had any connection to recent threats against President Donald Trump.
“I’m not going to guess on that,” Quinn told reporters. “Whether or not it was directed to the president or not, I don’t know, but we will find out.”
According to officials, Secret Service agents identified a “suspicious individual” believed to be armed. When approached, the suspect fled on foot before drawing a weapon and opening fire.
Agents returned fire, shooting and wounding the suspect, who was subsequently taken to hospital. His condition was not immediately known.
A bystander, described as a juvenile, sustained minor injuries during the exchange.
The shooting comes just over a week after another security scare in Washington, where 31-year-old Cole Allen was charged with attempting to assassinate President Trump after allegedly trying to breach security at a hotel where the president was attending an event.
Authorities say investigations into Monday’s incident are ongoing.
