An anti-suicide advocacy group, Suicide Is No Solution, has sounded the alarm over Nigeria’s worsening suicide crisis, revealing that a death occurs every 33 seconds, with an estimated 15,000 to 16,000 Nigerians dying by suicide each year.

The group emphasized that the issue demands urgent attention and should not be downplayed.

Project Coordinator Mr. Toye Arulogun, in a statement, noted that these figures reflect a broader global concern, with over 95,000 suicide deaths recorded worldwide in the first two months of 2026 alone. He stressed the importance of public awareness and responsible online content.

Arulogun said: “In recent weeks, we have observed a rise in reckless and insensitive online content by some Nigerian creators promoting suicide. Many of these posts even reference brands as tools or means for taking one’s life, potentially guiding vulnerable individuals and tarnishing the reputations of these brands.

“Content creators should instead focus on producing skits and messages that discourage Nigerians from taking their own lives, regardless of circumstances, rather than contributing to this dangerous trend.”
