Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the demolition and full reconstruction of Lagos’ Carter Bridge, the government confirmed on Wednesday.
Announcing the decision after a cabinet meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, Minister of Works David Umahi said the council also approved ₦5.6 billion to engage specialized engineering consultants for the design and cost assessment of the new bridge.
“Carter Bridge can no longer be rehabilitated; it must be completely rebuilt,” Umahi said, noting that the decision follows extensive consultations with stakeholders and had previously received FEC backing in an earlier session.
The Carter Bridge, one of Lagos’ busiest thoroughfares, links Lagos Island with the mainland and serves as a vital route for daily commuters and commercial traffic.
Minister of Works David Umahi also revealed that the FEC approved six additional large-scale infrastructure projects during Wednesday’s meeting, including major highway upgrades and reconstructions across multiple geopolitical zones.
The minister said the administration aims to complete and commission at least four projects per zone by May 15.
“These are substantial infrastructure initiatives, not mere stopgap measures,” he emphasized.
