MultiChoice has announced the shutdown of its streaming platform, Showmax, after 11 years of operation. The service was originally launched in 2015 in South Africa.
MultiChoice did not give a specific timeline for the shutdown but stated that its subscribers remain its “top priority.”
MultiChoice said the decision was driven by the need to strengthen its broader digital offering and ensure long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive streaming market.
The company notified subscribers of the development on Thursday through an email titled “Important update regarding Showmax.”
According to the message, the Showmax board reached the decision after conducting a comprehensive review of the streaming platform.
The company, however, assured users that the service would continue to operate normally for now, stressing that there would be no immediate disruption to current subscriptions and that customers do not need to take any action at this stage.
MultiChoice also acknowledged that the announcement may raise questions among users, adding that subscribers remain a priority and that plans are being put in place to ensure a smooth and well-communicated transition.
It said additional information, including timelines and any necessary next steps, would be communicated to subscribers well ahead of the shutdown.
